buses were rerouted off market street during the game but back up by 9:00 running there on market street. the 25 people most of them were arrested for public intoxication. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." okay. thank you very much. and after that loss niners president jed york telling us, yes, of course he's very disappointed but at the same time proud of what his team has accomplished. >> i think it's important that we do celebrate the season and know that work starts right now to get back here next year. >> and, yes, credit much of the team's success to jim harbaugh and also to his general manager trent blake. because the 49ers weren't able to strike that super bowl gold, mayor ed lee actually lost his bet. >> to keep up his end of the bargain, lee has to visit a local crab market wearing the ravens jersey while cracking open crab. part of the friendly wager, the

baltimore mayor will host ed lee for a day of service with the baltimore programs from americorps. check out nbcbayarea.com for all of your super bowl heighighligh. it has all of the most talked about moments from the game. new this morning, firefighters and police officers looking into the cause of an overnight house fire in san jose. firefighters arrived there to put out those flames but quickly had to call police once they got inside. this one happened at a home on scottsville court. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live right now in the south bay with details on what firefighters and police ended up finding inside that home. bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you jon. they found what appeared to have been a marijuana grow inside this two-story home here on scottsville court. it's not clear if that setup had anything to do with the cause of this fire. it's not clear how many plants were inside or whether or not it was legal.

police have not said if this had been a legally licensed grow for medical purposes. the call went out around 11:45 last night. never went pas one alarm. you can get a sense of how extensive the damage was. the fire department had to break in through the garage. that's one reason why it's boarded up. no reports of anyone getting hurt. to give you a sense of the neighborhood where this happened, this is a residential street lined with single and double story houses. seems to be very family friendly as there appears to be an in-home day care center next door. at least that's according to the sign out front. we did try to get in touch with authorities this morning. we did speak with the fire department briefly on the phone and they referred us to pd telling us this was now a police matter. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> 5:04. what is sure to be a heated debate over stun guns is set to take place today. the san francisco police department has proposed to arm its officers with tasers. community members are fighting

to keep the weapons out of officers' hands. the concern that stun guns will be used on the already disenfranchised population namely those with mental illness. it's 5:04 right now. bay area just kind of in a funk right now. >> we are. >> to help sprinkle sunshine here, christina loren is here with good news to help us get out of it. >> we have a lot of fog building in this morning. it's not going to be there all day. we'll see abundant sunshine by noon for the greater bay area. however, coastal cities, it's going to be cool today. 40 degrees in san jose. inland cities are still slated to hit highs just about as warm as yesterday but we've got this onshore flow robust this morning. we're noticing your visibility dropping off from santa rosa to napa only about a quarter mile to half mile visibility and that goes for fairfield as well. concord starting to drop off. taking you to future cast. we stop the clock for you at 8:00 a.m. mostly cloudy conditions across the greater bay area. the clouds will serve as a blanket and trap in some of the warmth and that means it's not going to be too bitter cold this

morning. and we'll lose a lot of that cloud cover by 11:00. onshore flow means a cool sea breeze throughout the day. you'll probably need that jacket especially in our coastal communities. we have the most sunshine between 1:00 and 2:00 over the greater bay area today. 65 degrees in livermore. 65 in gilroy. 63 in beautiful san jose. 64 degrees in fairfield. as we head throughout the afternoon, highs coming in between 3:30 and 4:00 this time of year and then the sun goes down around 5:30 p.m. we'll have your full forecast and let you know when showers arrive and when you will need that umbrella coming up in my next report. first, let's check on the roads with mike. >> look at here. this is east shore freeway. westbound interstate 80 underneath university avenue over crossing and traffic flow nicely spaced there. easy, light drive. you're at the limit. map shows you the same area i marked out where i showed you live look with arrow there. not a problem on any approaches to the bay bridge. we'll show you further north off the carquinez bridge.

the fog registering and that may be an issue as you travel north of vallejo and throughout much of the north bay where it is registering on our sensors and christina showed you at times quarter mile visibility. that's low enough to cause an issue as far as driving and visibility there. a word of caution for your north bay drive. as you see from the speed sensors, not a problem. we'll take you down to palo alto as well. peninsula there is low clouds here as well. and through san mateo christina showed half mile visibility farther north from here. you see the glow of the lights. we'll track that fog as it does affect your drive and i'll show you some of that coming up in the next report. back to you. >> thank you very much. new airline will soon be taking off at mineta san jose airport. "today in the bay's" marla tellez is live at the airport with the airline moving in and flights that are welcome news for business travelers. when are we taking off, marla? >> reporter: may 1st, laura. virgin america will start service here. it's great here for business travelers who have more options now for those people who need to make the quick getaway out of

silicon valley. great news for them. virgin america is headquartered right up the road in burlingame is expected to announce today it will begin offering flights from sjc to los angeles with four trips daily. virgin america if you have never flown it before is known for low fares mixed with fancy amenities including in-flight wi-fi and mo moonlit cabins. it will have to fight for passengers against southwest, american, alaska and united. passengers we spoke to today say they are happy to hear the news. >> it's encouraging. great airline. treats customers as well. they are coming out of san jose and that's exciting. >> it's great. a quick trip. just one shot and everything. that will be wonderful. that's good.

that's good. >> reporter: the virgin america announcement comes weeks after the announcement of flights to japan. because of the problems that 787 had, that service is currently on hold. the flights are expected to start on may 1st. also pretty good news for the economy. virgin says it will add 15 workers to this airport once it starts its service here. live from san jose international, marla tellez, "today in the bay." >> all right. see if it brings everyone else's prices down a bit. >> we hope for that. 5:09 right now. coming up, it was the attack of the killer bees. there's more. we'll take a look at the super bowl commercials that people will be talking about all morning long including one focusing on a 49er superstar. is it possible one of the best commercials didn't run on tv at all? we'll take a look coming up in

without your direct permission. california is actually far ahead on this. california attorney general set up a very similar list of guidelines for app developers in early january. it should be noted nearly the state or federal guidelines are actual laws. they are not rules. they are guidelines. that means app developers are free not to follow them as long as they understand they will make both the federal trade commission and the state attorney general very unhappy. we continue that strange disconnect this morning between the economy, which is sort of puttering along and the stock market which is setting records. clearly investors expect better times ahead. let's turn to bertha coombs live at cnbc word headquarters. good morning, bertha. >> good morning. futures are slightly lower. the dow closing above 14,000 on friday for the first time since

october 2007. investors reactsi ireacting to than expected reports. it will be a quiet week when it comes to data. reports on the service sectors. the dow jumping to 14,009. just about 200 points away from an all-time high. the nasdaq adding nearly 36 to 3179 and we won't talk about how far away the nasdaq is from an all-time high. it will take a long time to get back above 5,000. >> hopefully for good reason this time. all right. bertha coombs, happy monday to you. oreo getting a lot of good press this morning after that tweet seen around the world. kraft foods able to put up this picture just a few moments after the lights went out at the super bowl last night. as one media critic put it, oreo had the best super bowl ad and it wasn't on tv. it's really not that difficult to put up a funny picture quickly on twitter.

what is difficult, jon and laura, is getting permission from the marketing people, vice president and this and that. that would take days in most companies. according to several reports, kraft actually put its entire marketing team in a room ready to make a decision about something they didn't even know was going to happen like the power going out. just like that. >> oreo jumped over it. cool. >> planning ahead. >> good lesson. >> i like it. >> modern day. >> i'm a fan of oreos. i look the cookie part. they had the ad on there. cream i can do without. if anybody likes the cream, wants to trade. >> i like the cream. >> christina loren, what's happening outside? >> opposite attract. we're going to see opposites. i always knew there was something about those two. 5:15. good morning to you. a good looking way to start your monday. temperatures are mild now. blanket of clouds overhead. looks like we're showing you a shot of cars driving through the fog. this could be just about anywhere as we have some really thick fog out there this morning.

where is this, guys, by the way? san rafael. 40 in san jose. 35 degrees in gilroy. note to drivers, make sure you're ready. you may walk out the front door in san jose and even livermore find no fog and then you'll encounter thick patches as you hit the roadway. travel cautiously. mike and i are tag teaming on top of the fog this morning. visibility right now dropping off in places like napa, fairfield, concord and even livermore. make sure you grab your coat and you want to make sure your super alert when you hit the highway. fog is a factor until 10:00 a.m. and then we'll see skies open up. between 6:00 and 8:00, fog at its thickest. we expect thick dense fog to develop over the san francisco bay where it will linger until 10:00 a.m. however, most of the bay area getting a break. getting a bit of sunshine for today and by noon we'll see sunshine between noon and 3:00 today. after which time fog rolls right back in and we'll probably track some drizzle and showers tomorrow morning. 65 degrees for today in livermore. 61 in fremont.

63 in santa theresa. through the next three days, temperatures tumble by tomorrow we're back in the 50s. only for a day. we'll be back to the low 60s on wednesday. and then showers move in late thursday into friday. we get a round of rain. nothing significant. we need it at this point we're starting to run a deficit in terms of your average total. we'll be on top of that for you. mike is all over your morning drive. >> good morning. deficit in the number of cars on the road. we don't mind that. keeps things moving smoothly. picking up volume now. a new crash just behind that 87 here north 101 at 87. a report of a crash there. sounds like everything is out of the lanes. i'll track that for the south bay. no big whoop as far as northbound commute direction or southbound for that matter. over here, a little build for your folks coming out of the altamont pass. holding steady and clearing as far as slowing in toward the dublin interchange. there is your commute route. no slowing again except for a minor buildup. you have to slow for the bend. we'll take folks over to the san mateo bridge and point out a

couple things. smoother drive but a few more cars and they disappear as low clouds and fog make the high-rise view disappear here. on the foster city side, peninsula, look at this. i can't see the folks coming off the bridge. i can only see them as they make their way on 92 closer to the camera. that's an issue as far as visibility goes here and in patches as we look at the maps through the area as well. the orange on my maps do show where fog is possible factor. here for 280 and 101. city not an issue but farther north like christina showed you issue coming into san rafael. back to you. 5:17 right now. before you gear up and take off, the last thing you need to think about is getting injured at a ski resort. accidents happen across the country and here in california. the investigative unit obtained a first ever report card which grades every resort in the state on safety. >> only one ski resort in the state got an f for safety and

highest mark was a b. we took to the slopes to get a firsthand look at some of the potential hazards this new report identifies. >> this is a fixed cable. >> reporter: from cables at neck height. rundown chair lifts to exposed metal poles. dick can find it. he's a former ski parotroller a expert witness involved in lawsuits against the industry. >> the fences and hazard marking and the signing and all that stuff is up there but when you look at it closely, some of it is incredibly dangerous. >> reporter: to help people know about potential dangers on the mountain, he led a team of researchers who made unannounced visits to every california ski area. his findings became the basis for this report card by the california ski and snowboard safety organization. the advocacy group gave ski letters letter grades that range

from a b to an f at mt. baldy outside of l.a. boreal received a d for padding facing the wrong direction. >> we're constantly correcting issues. the problem with this report is it was put together on a single day. one off day that they come in. evaluate the resort. >> reporter: the president of mt. baldy said he doesn't like being an f and will take a closer look at the recommendations from the report card to see what he can do to improve safety there. you'll hear more from the ski industry tonight at 11:00 in our full investigation. coming up, we'll take a look at the best commercials of the super bowl. >> and right now we'll take a look live outside spanning over the south bay. that is san jose before the sun comes up. christina loren telling us it's going to be a nice day so enjoy

you can see clearly across the span but anywhere north of san rafael road weather index points out there may be fog thick enough to cause an issue. quarter mile for many spots in the north bay as christina pointed out. this is the bay bridge and more cars now. a couple cars have to wait at the cash lanes but the fastrak lanes not a problem. we'll show you entire maze and approach. you're at the limit through oakland and through berkeley and emeryville. caldecott tunnel eastbound we're showing a slowdown as they shift the commute directions. only one tunnel open in the eastbound direction. four lanes for that tunnel. one tunnel. and then westbound you have your two tunnels for the morning commute. off the carquinez bridge, it could be an issue. orange on maps means there's fog likely in the area and could affect your view. 680/24 interchange earlier crash that cleared from 680.

"today in the bay's" christie smith live in san francisco. she's got that part of the story for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. those 49ers sure staged a heck of a comeback but in the end it just wasn't enough to win the game. very disappointing for 49ers fans and san francisco police were ready for any sort of vandalism or fan violence that might break out after the game. giants world series win that sketchers store you saw across the street was completely

covered in graffiti and across the street that popeye's was spray painted. this time much calmer. a different outcome but 25 people arrested mostly for public intoxication according to early numbers released by the san francisco police department. still a few people did throw bottles at police officers over at 24th street. good news, no one hurt there. it was quickly contained and another person arrested after they tried to light something on fire over near 16th street. police were ready for anything with extra officers. also parking officers shut down parts of 24th street in the mission to eliminate cruising as fans spilled out of bars they did their absolute best to look past the loss to the ravens. >> we still second place. we're still better than every other team out there. i said it last year. harbaugh brought us farther in one season than any other coach did in years. >> reporter: after the game and

early this morning street sweepers are still buzzing and so are power washing signifying the party is over. after the giants world series win, a muni bus was burned and va vandalized. this time buses were rerouted off market street during the game but back on after 9:00 p.m. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." right now on nbcbayarea.com, you can find a photo gallery of 49ers fans and best plays of super bowl xlvii and get a look at what happened when the power went off on the field and celebratory pictures by the other team. a teenager is dead and another in the hospital after they both were shot on a san jose street late last night. this happened just after 9:00 in san jose. near story road and mclaughlin. police say the teenagers were shot near an elementary school. one was pronounced dead at that scene. the other remains hospitalized

but is expected to be okay. officers right now investigating whether the shooting might be gang related. for the record, this marks the city's fourth homicide of the year. there's a possible arrest after deadly shooting at an oakland community event. the shooting happened downtown during a community gathering called first friday. the bay area news group reports police arrested someone on saturday but the suspect's name will not be released until the d.a. files formal charges. mayor jean kwan promised to increase security surrounding the event. three days of meetings this week in texas for the boy scouts. a long standing ban on gay scouts will be discussed. the policy under scrutiny after a boy scout was denied his eagle scout award after he came out gay to his troop and to his leaders. the boy scouts said last week that it is considering changing that policy to allow individual troops to decide whether they

will accept gay members. some major corporate sponsors like intel and u.p.s. have withdrawn their support from the organization because of that current policy. >> we want to switch gears and check that forecast. meteorologist christina loren, set our week right. >> it will be a nice start to the week. we have to get through this pea soup fog first. strong onshore flow filling in inland valleys. not just usual suspects. santa rosa down to san francisco getting fogged in this morning. we have overcast conditions all the way across to san jose and livermore. reach your destination safely. also a lot of people i noticed on my drive into work much more than usual. i think a lot of people celebrating out there in parts. 38 degrees in livermore -- or crying. 34 degrees in gilroy. we'll get them next year. cool thing is, hey we had the giants in the world series and the 49ers in the super bowl. it doesn't get much better than that around here.

temperatures as we head throughout the day today, they're going to be really nice for the return of those 49ers when they get in this afternoon temperatures in the mid 60s. 65 in livermore. 64 in concord. 61 in fremont. a nice day to return home. two things change very quickly. sharp turns ahead in the weather department. i'll take you through those changes coming up. 5:35. first, want to check on that drive. good morning, mike. >> good morning. christina told you about that fog on the peninsula. we saw half mile visibility on her maps through san mateo. you do see a glow in palo alto. lower clouds drifted through the area over the course of the last hour. northbound 101 right here on the live shot. you see volume picking up as well. the maps show you farther north the orange creeps in. orange highlighting on our maps talks about the fog possibly being an issue for visibility. patches for 101 and 280 coming down through woodside and along that area of the peninsula. we'll look to the south bay with a smooth drive northbound for most routes not a problem. north 87 toward 101 a crash

there. a single car sticking out in your fast lane. watch northbound approaching the merge with 101 past the airport. live look outside to show you oakland. darker there. clouds not an issue. volume picking up and down the east shore freeway approaching the bay bridge. more slowing through berkeley. there you go. close to the limit through this area. back to you. >> all right. maybe a hit for the skies. new airline will take off from san jose mineta airport. marla tellez is live with the airline that's moving in. this actually could mean lower fares to southern california. >> reporter: good morning to you. we could see a price war which could bode well for passengers. last month we were talking about dreamliners debut service here and today it's all about virgin america. the burlingame based company airline is set to announce service to los angeles from sjc with those flights debuting may 1st. just under three months from now virgin is expected to offer four

nonstop flights to l.a. every day. and some critics say virgin america is brave to go up against competitors like southwest, american, united and alaska which have long been flying out of sjc but business travelers we spoke to today seem to think more options are better. >> it's a great reputation of customer service. economical flights. on schedule timing. i think they have great shot at it. >> they need another airline to do that. there's a lot of people that go to l.a. good commute flight. >> reporter: if you have never been on a virgin american flight, you are looking at a picture i took when i flew virgin. known for low fares, in-flight wi-fi and mood lit cabins. it's like a party in the sky. virgin will become the 11th airline at san jose international. the flights will start on may 1st.

president firing a weapon raising a few eyebrows. "today in the bay's" tracie potts is live on capitol hill this morning with more on this growing controversy. tracie, good morning. >> hi, jon. good morning. you saw the photo over the weekend. it's a photo of president obama skeet shooting at camp david. it came as a result of an interview he did where he was asked while you're talking about gun control and restricting guns, have you ever fired one? the president said we do it all the time at camp david. his critics said prove it and out came this photo released by the white house. then there was criticism that it was taken and released just to try to get support for the president's programs which people who typically use firearms have been opposing. that's part of what the president will talk about today in minneapolis. he's there. his first trip out of washington to drum up support for this plan. parts of it seem to be moving forward here on capitol hill. there's growing support for universal background checks but other parts like the assault

weapons ban you don't even hear the administration talking about it as much anymore and that's one that even democrats here don't think is going anywhere. so today we'll get the president's take and by the way, they picked minneapolis because it's a city that the white house says has really done a lot to curb gun violence. they think it will be a good backdrop and do the same things the president wants to do on a federal level. >> tracie potts, thank you very much. we know you'll be on top of it for us. happening now, southern california highway is still shut down this morning as the chp investigates a tour bus crash that killed at least eight people last night. the crash happened on state route 38 about 80 miles east of los angeles. the chp spokesperson says the driver reported having brake problems while traveling down the mountain. the bus rear ended a sedan and then flipped over and hit a pickup truck. eight people were killed. 38 others hurt. the people on the bus were part of a tour group from tijuana. funeral services being held

today for former new york mayor ed koch. today's services being held at temple emanuel in manhattan's upper east side. president bill clinton expected to be among the people delivering remarks at the service. he and koch were good friends. koch died on friday of congestive heart failure. he was 88 years old. new this morning, san jose police are called to a house on fire in the south bay after firefighters discover something inside that burning home. it happened just before midnight at a home on scottsville court. last night just before nmidnigh. a one-alarm fire. the fire department had to tear down the garage door to get inside. we don't know if the fire was actually inside the garage itself or if this was the best point of access. you can see since then that the garage door and front door have been boarded up. there were no injuries and we did try to speak to the fire department this morning when we got them on the phone. they referred us to pd telling us this was now a police matter. we do know it was a one-alarm fire. you can see the damage done to the house. appears in terms of the fire itself it was minimal. no scorching on the outside. you can see the damage the firefighters had to do to get inside to put out this fire. and as far as whether or not this was a legal grow or not, we haven't heard from pd with regards to this whether it was for medical purposes or if it was illegal. to give you a sense of this neighborhood, this is a residential area. streets lined with one and two story homes similar to this one right here. and right next door is an

something you can peel off later on when temperatures climb into the mid 60s inland. comfortable day shaping up. just about as warm as it was yesterday. however, something we did not have to deal with, fog. really thick. you can see for a couple hundred feet in fairfield. half mile visibility available in concord. napa, even santa rosa down to a quarter mile. fog is drifting around. wherever you are headed, just plan on slowing down and tapping those brakes for reduced visibility. throughout the day, fog at its thickest at 8:00. stop future cast by noon. marine layer pushes back out to sea. what happens is whenever we get a strong onshore flow it means plenty of low clouds in the morning and a beautiful sea breeze in the afternoon. that will make the true temperature feel cooler. you'll need that jacket all day long at the immediate coast and down the peninsula through the silicon valley. we stop the clock for you as we wake up and meet back here tomorrow morning. mostly cloudy conditions. we're expecting showers to develop and move onshore as we head throughout tomorrow afternoon. so count on that. also expecting some drizzle as we wake up and meet back here

wednesday morning. things will change. we'll lose that sunshine. one thing that we are happy to lose is all of that haze. that particulate matter starting to clear our atmosphere. 65 in livermore. 63 in san jose. taking you into the next three days, temperatures start to drop off. they'll be really chilly thursday into friday. and then looking good. that sun comes right back out just in time for fan fest at at&t park this saturday. let's check your drive. good morning, mike. >> good morning. we're looking at the south bay where you have your pretty typical pattern here. first burst happening just about now quarter to 6:00 for northbound 101. heading up in toward the interchange with 87. now north 87 right at 101 earlier crash still reported there. might be sticking out in your fast lane. over the last 20 minutes i have seen no slowing as the activity continues to evolve over there. we don't have anything worse than just sticking out into that fast lane. now we'll look over to the tri-valley. we do have a build to volume

here as well coming through livermore no problems south through pleasanton and sunol. into livermore more slowing. orange and red kicking in out of the altamont pass. that means speeds coming down into the 30s and 40s as you approach altamont and then into the 50s. a look across the bay bridge. start with that. the volume starts to build here for these cash lanes. the fastrak lanes a smooth flow of traffic and no metering lights. 15 to 20 minutes for that. i want to show you the smooth flow and lighter volume for westbound commute. it goes into the fog on the peninsula. that could be an issue for you. look at the maps. we do have that showing up here for 280 and for patches for 101. keep that in mind. i'll show you the north bay in the next report. back to you. >> thank you very much. along with the super bowl comes that great halftime show. a lot of people buzzing about beyonce this morning. ♪ all the single ladies >> that's right looking and feeling good.

5:52. welcome back, everybody. for the first time in a decade, mcdonald's offering its first new entree for the happy meal. they begin cooking up fish mcbites. that's when the meal comes with seven pieces of fish, french fries, apple slices and a drink. company officials say the promotion is slated to last through march to coincide with lent. mcdonald's announceded it would only serve sustainable fish making it the first american chain restaurant to do so.

the stock market seems to be sup supersized this morning despite an economy that putters along. >> i like the word putter. it's not bad. it's not good. it's mostly just unchanged despite washington's attempt to light a fire under it. the stock market is a whole different story doing incredibly well. if we learned one thing together, you and i, i hope it's that the stock market and the economy are not the same thing. the dow closed friday above 14,000. the first time it's done that since 2007. if we gained 150 points today, the dow would close at the highest level since the index was invented in 1986. all this despite the fact that data released last week shows the american economy shrinking and friday a immediate mediocre

jobs report. people continued to get laid off from government jobs that weighed in on the numbers. and an interesting statistic from our co-workers at cnbc. they point out the region with the lower unemployment rate nearly always wins the super bowl. and maryland has better job growth than california. we have 9.8% unemployment. maryland has a mere 6.6. now of course not getting a key holding or pass interference call may be a factor as well. i don't know. could be. >> that's some study already. >> i was screaming at the tv. i would have thrown the flag at the end of the game. >> scott, thank you very much. i'm with you on that one, my man. >> can't shake yesterday, can we? >> i got to admit, i'm in a funk. >> okay. christina has a look at the forecast though, right? >> proud to wake up part of the
